I wrote up this guide mainly to help an IRL friend. However, I have also seen numerous threads seeking advice on how to improve damage. This guide will cover everything you can do to improve your damage, and hopefully it will be of use to some players who are struggling with this aspect of Skyblock. If I miss out on something, feel free to tell me.
NOTE: This guide helps with increasing both melee/ranged damage and magic damage.
This one should be fairly obvious. You should always be looking to upgrade your weapon (if you can). For example, depending on your budget and purpose, you might want to purchase a Shadow Fury to replace your Livid Dagger. If you earn money at a faster rate, you may want to skip the SF altogether and get a more worthwhile weapon, like a Giant’s Sword. In my case, I went from a Livid Dagger to 4 Bonemerangs (back when they were regarded as the best archer weapon) + a Flower of Truth, and eventually, a Hyperion. Once the Enderman Slayer update rolled out, I waited a bit before buying a Terminator.
When picking a weapon upgrade, make sure that it is good for what you are going to be doing in the game. For instance, if you are looking to deal more damage against Voidgloom Slayers so that you can get the requirement needed to use a Juju, you would get one of the weapons along the Voidwalker Katana line (Voidedge, Vorpal, Atomsplit). If you don’t meet the requirements for these, then you might consider another weapon with high base damage, perhaps an OFA Shadow Fury or Livid Dagger.
On the other hand, if you were playing the Mage class in Dungeons, you would look for weapons which are able to output high amounts of damage through ability usage (Spirit Sceptre, Midas’ Staff, Hyperion, Giant’s Sword if LCM).
Something else which is fairly obvious, and people wonder why they are only dealing 40k damage in ¾ Shadow Assassin and a Zombie Knight Chestplate.
Don’t get me wrong, ¾ SA isn’t as bad as people make it out to be, but there are just so many better armor sets out there. Necron, for example, has around 70 more strength and 30 or so more crit damage than SA+Zk Chestplate.
This may not seem like too much, but remember: it scales in dungeons to the point where the difference between the two sets is drastic! Of course this also depends on your Catacombs Level, which is something I will get into later. If you are Mage, then Storm’s Armor would be optimal due to the massive amount of intelligence it grants the user. This allows you to deal much more damage, through both abilities and mage beams.
All the while you are upgrading your Armor and Weapons, you also want to make sure that you’re stocking up on Accessories. While the reforge buff each accessory gives is quite small, it eventually adds up when you have enough of them!
You should first try and obtain the cheaper accessories (<1m), before aiming for the more expensive ones and accessory upgrades (for example, Ender Artifact to Ender Relic). One accessory that I heavily recommend getting is the Melody’s Hair. I know the quest can be painful, especially for people with high ping (such as myself), but c’mon. It’s literally a free accessory, and an epic one at that.
Reforging plays a massive role in your damage output, especially if the rarity of your weapon/armor piece is high one. Below are the reforges that I recommend for different weapons/armor and accessories. You can also find the name of the reforge stone next to the reforge itself, and how you obtain it.
Maximum damage output/DPS-
-Fabled (Dragon Claw, obtained from killing any Ender Dragon)
-Withered (Wither Blood, obtained from post-boss dungeon chests in Floor 7 of the Catacombs. Can also be obtained by killing Necron 50 times.)
-Suspicious (Suspicious Vial, obtained from post-boss dungeon chests in Floor 3 of the Catacombs. Can also be obtained via Professor collection).
-Dirty (Dirt Bottle, obtained from the Smithmonger for 100,000 coins)
Fabled is generally the best among these outside of dungeons, while Withered tends to be SLIGHTLY better inside dungeons (depending on your catacombs level). Dirty is extremely situational and is often considered inferior to these, but can be quite decent for DPS on a weapon with high ferocity when paired with a Tiger.
Maximum Ability Damage/Magic Damage-
-Heroic (no reforge stone, obtained from the Blacksmith)
-Spiritual (Spirit Stone, obtained from Floor 4 of the catacombs. Can also be obtained by killing Thorn 50 times).
-Rapid (no reforge stone, obtained from the Blacksmith)
-Hasty (no reforge stone, obtained from the Blacksmith)
NOTE: Hasty should ONLY be put on a Terminator shortbow, in which case it is better than both Rapid and Spiritual. This is due to the high amount of Critical Chance that Hasty grants, helping the player to counter the crit chance reduction from the Terminator.
Maximum damage output/DPS-
-Ancient (Precursor Gear, obtained from post-boss dungeon chests in Floor 7 of the catacombs).
-Fierce (No reforge stone, obtained from the Blacksmith)
It should be noted that Ancient is substantially better than Fierce, and Fierce should only be chosen if the player is on an extremely low budget.
Maximum Ability Damage/Magic Damage-
-Necrotic (Necromancer’s Brooch, obtained from Floors 1-4 of the catacombs)
-Loving (Red Scarf, obtained from Floor 2 of the catacombs. Can also be obtained by killing Scarf 25 times).
Loving is generally put on the chestplate of an armor set, while the rest is Necrotic. This is because Loving grants similar intelligence stats to Necrotic, but also an additional 5% ability damage. However, it can only be applied to a chestplate.
It should also be noted that, if the player is an LCM, they should reforge their Storm’s armor to Ancient in order to get a good balance of intelligence and damage stats (this is what the mage beam scales off of). Their weapon should also be Withered or Fabled, as the damage given by those reforges far outweighs the somewhat small amount of intelligence that Heroic gives.
Common-Rare accessories-
-Shaded (Dark Orb, obtained from Floor 5 of the catacombs. Can also be obtained by killing Livid 50 times).
-Forceful (No reforge stone, obtained from the Blacksmith)
-Hurtful (No reforge stone, obtained from the Blacksmith)
-Silky (Luxurious Spool, obtained from killing the Broodmother at the Spider’s Den)
Shaded is often considered the best of these reforges for this rarity range (and also the most expensive), as it grants a good balance of Critical Damage and Strength while also giving the most damage units. However, you should still try and balance out your crit damage and strength by utilising these reforges on different accessories.
Epic accessories-
-Strange (no reforge stone, obtained from the Blacksmith)
-Shaded (Dark Orb, obtained from Floor 5 of the catacombs. Can also be obtained by killing Livid 50 times)
Shaded should ONLY be put on epic accessories if you are an LCM, or don’t need attack speed. Otherwise, Strange is much better, as it allows the player to swing their sword/shoot arrows much more rapidly, while only sacrificing a small amount of single-hit damage.
Legendary-Mythic Accessories-
-Strong (no reforge stone, obtained from the Blacksmith)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: You are not required to use this exact reforge setup to deal millions of damage. You can use slightly different reforges and end up with similar damage. For example, you could put your uncommon accessories on Strange, lose slightly more damage units but still gain a good amount of attack speed. Another decent setup is to put your common accessories on bloody.
The pet which you use is another important factor which contributes to your damage. Undoubtedly, you should use an EHP pet if you require it to survive, but this is not what this guide is about. We want the maximum damage, don’t we?
The best pet for damage in almost every situation is a Legendary Ender Dragon Pet. Tier-boosted or not, it doesn’t really matter; it’s not like the extra 20 Critical Damage from Iron Claws is going to do you much good. The 10% stat boost is all you really need (this is insane, especially inside of dungeons).
Let’s think about the budget for a second. Many people can’t afford an Ender Dragon Pet, which is why I’m going to list some cheaper options.
-Wither Skeleton: INSANELY cheap for how good it is, and can potentially out damage Ender Dragon on Floor 7 of the catacombs (especially for RCMs). That’s saying something. Make sure you purchase the Legendary variant for the ‘Death’s touch’ ability, which deals 200% of your damage over 3 seconds when you damage an enemy.
-Griffin: Can still be a bit pricey for players who don’t have loads of money, but is very good, even after the strength nerf. The Griffin has good base stats, and also buffs the player’s strength by 15% assuming they are using a Lvl 100 legendary Griffin and are above 85% health. Its first perk, Odyssey, can also make you a decent amount of money during the period that Diana is mayor (it allows you to find high-tier mythical creatures, which can drop rare items).
-Blaze: This pet is perhaps the most expensive out of these, but is insane when paired with Frozen Blaze Armor. While The Blaze Pet’s base stats are quite awful, its ability to increase the stats of Frozen Blaze by 40%, as well as doubling the stats of Hot Potato books, can allow for similar damage to Necron + Ender Dragon if used at a high catacombs level. Outside of dungeons, however, Necron is substantially better unless FB is used in the Blazing Fortress.
-Tiger: Decently cheap, and is actually preferred over the Ender Dragon when using a ferocity weapon such as Valkyrie. This is due to the already-high ferocity being multiplied even more by the Tiger’s perks and base stats, sometimes allowing for higher DPS than if you were using an Ender Dragon. The Legendary variant’s perk can also be useful for yellow room minibosses as well as Necron in Phase 4 of F7.
-Golden Dragon: This is the pet that all early-game players should aim for.
Recombobulators are a great way to build up more strength and crit damage while not spending too much money. I recommend that you recombobulate worthwhile armor sets and weapons, such as Giant’s Sword, Valkyrie, Necron’s Armor and Storm’s Armor. Recombobulating a full set of Ancient-reforged armor grants an extra 40 strength, and this becomes multiplied by your catacombs level. Pretty good for the price of 20m (ish).
Another use for recombobulators is turning your rare accessories into epic ones. You can then take advantage of the Strange reforge to gain an insane amount of attack speed, reducing your single-hit damage by a bit but dramatically increasing DPS. This can be a bit pricey for some people though, so a cheaper option would be either putting uncommon accessories on Strange or putting Bloody on your common ones. Once you are late-end game, you can recombobulate all of your accessories and gain a huge amount of crit damage and strength!
Like recombobulators, gemstones are awesome little stat boosts that can build up damage. Many combat armor sets, such as Frozen Blaze and Necron’s allow you to put in 2 combat gemstones of your choice. Assuming you decide to put in 2 fine Jasper gemstones, you would gain an extra 10 strength on each piece. This bonus is increased if you put in gemstones of higher quality!
After the update, it’s not as worth it to put gemstones in Necron and other wither armor due to the absurd cost of unlocking the slot, but due to the massive amount of armor sets that already have gemstone slots, you probably won’t have a hard time with that.
