De film is onderverdeeld in drie hoofdstukken. Het eerste deel gaat over een groep kosmonauten die de Aarde ontvluchten om een beter leven op te zoeken. Maar naarmate de ouderen sterven, degenereert de maatschappij. Het middendeel vertelt de tragische geschiedenis van een opstand van mensen, onder aanvoering van een kosmonaut-Messias, tegen de tirannie van eigenaardige vogel creaturen. Het laatste deel, draait rond een flashback naar de moeilijke tijd van de kosmonauten op Aarde.
