Any Positive Content?

  • Violence & Scariness

    a lot

A character falls down the stairs and knocks their head, with a small amount of blood shown, resulting in falling unconscious. There are scenes in an emergency room, though these are not intense or gory. A break-in involves a character pointing a gun at others, threatening to take their own life, and shooting another character. There is also a flashback that sees a character shot dead. At times there is an eerie, mildly frightening atmosphere with phantom music playing and objects being moved without explanation, as well as a scene where a soul temporarily leaves a body.

  • Sex, Romance & Nudity

    some

Characters kiss on the lips and are shown naked beneath sheets with the implication that sex has taken place. Nudity is shown from behind. There is passing mention of perceived sexual promiscuity.

  • Diverse Representations

    some

The cast shows racial diversity, with the main character a multiracial woman with a Black best friend, who features prominently. Body shapes are almost exclusively slim and characters seen to be conventionally attractive. There's a glib reference to mental health, when a character says people who believe in ghosts have "real issues" and "suicidal thoughts," and language such as "mental" and "cuckoo" is used.

  • Positive Messages

    a little

The film suggests not to make snap judgments and to keep an open mind about others. It also touches upon the enduring power of love. How loneliness and isolation can result from not being believed by those around you.

  • Positive Role Models

    a little

Lisa is shown to be kind toward others, to form strong friendships, and learns to keep an open mind after an initial first impression. She is seen to drink and smoke drugs, though not beyond mild intoxication. Her best friend, Tiffany, is portrayed as supportive and loyal, but can also be flippant and narrow-minded.

  • Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Until We Meet Again is a romance centered on the relationship between a young woman and a ghost and has occasional strong language, marijuana use, and violence. The movie explores the relationship of Lisa (Janel Parrish), a young musician, and Eddie (Jackson Rathbone), a ghost who resides in the house Lisa is house sitting. At one point sex is implied, and Eddie is seen naked from behind. There are some eerie moments, though no strong scares. Moments of violence without gore include a character being shot dead and another falling down the stairs. Occasional strong language is used, including "s--t" and "a--hole," as well some offensive terms around sexism and mental health, such as "slut" and "cuckoo." Characters drink alcohol and smoke marijuana, but are not seen heavily under the influence. The film is a light, cheesy love story with a twist that may entertain mid-teens upward, but the production quality lets the movie down. What's the Story?

In UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, struggling young musician Lisa (Janel Parrish) arranges to house sit a luxurious property. It seems too good to be true until she starts hearing phantom piano tunes and noticing objects have moved of their own accord. Soon she discovers she's not alone, but sharing the home with a handsome concert pianist called Eddie (Jackson Rathbone) who died tragically decades earlier.

The premise could have been quite an interesting one, but very little is done with the concept here in director Pence Dingo's first feature film since his 1990 debut, Midnight Cabaret. Until We Meet Again's production doesn't confidently follow any of the potential avenues that present themselves. It could have leaned in more heavily to the scares at the start, to the comedy throughout, or to more of a tragic star-crossed theme for the lovers.

Instead, a mixture of slightly wooden acting and loose editing makes the film feel stilted and underwhelming. The result is a barely watchable odd romance that never quite works hard enough to ground its reality and fully announce its ghostly presence.
